Atlanta was originally home to the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans prior to European settlement in the early 1800s. The city itself began as a stop on the Western and Atlantic Railroad and was originally called Thrasherville, then later Marthasville, before its incorporation as Atlanta in 1847. Atlanta was largely destroyed during the United States' Civil War and required significant reconstruction in the following decades.
Today, Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia and its most populous city, with a population of over 447,000. The city also serves as the county seat of Fulton County. Some of Atlanta's most popular and recognizable buildings and institutions include the Fox Theatre, the Georgia Aquarium, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Coca-Cola world headquarters.
