A Quick Look at the History of Air Conditioning
In 1758, Benjamin Franklin discovered that liquid evaporation always has a cooling effect. This discovery served as a catalyst for John Gorrie’s patented compression-based cooling machine in 1852. Then, in 1914, a wealthy Minnesotan named Charles Gilbert Gates decided he would have an air conditioning unit installed in his home. In doing so, he was the first consumer in history who owned a personal air conditioning system. The window air conditioner was invented by J.H. Shultz and J.Q. Sherman in 1931. By the end of the 1950’s, more than ten times as many homes were equipped with air conditioners as were in 1949.
