Common Indicators That Your Water Heater is at the End of Its Life

Last updated 4 months ago

Today, water heaters can easily last for decades, and they offer efficiency ratings not seen in older models. While your water heater may have performed admirably for many years, there will come a time when it reaches the end of its useful life. Learning to recognize the signs that this has happened can save you money and discomfort. Here are some common indicators:

  • No Hot Water:

The most obvious sign that your hot water heater has failed is a complete lack of hot water in your home. If your hot water heater is not working at all, it can be a sign of a non-functioning heating element or other general failure. Water heaters older than ten years can often be beyond their warranty periods and while some repairs may be possible. It is best to consult with your HVAC agent and determine if replacement is more economical.

  • Knocking Noises:

A properly functioning water heater should not make undue noises during normal operation. A water heater that pings, makes knocking noises or emits high-pitched whistling is in dire need of attention. Aged water heaters can get noisy in their last years of life, and this is a solid indicator that it is time to have them replaced by something newer.

  • Water Heater Runs Constantly

A malfunctioning thermostat or other sensor can cause a water heater to run constantly, racking up your energy costs and wasting a large amount of energy. At this point, it is definitely time to choose a newer and more efficient model for your home. Even in an otherwise efficient home, a malfunctioning water can cause your utility costs to skyrocket.

  • Intermittent Hot Water

A water heater that only delivers hot water on occasion may be a candidate for repairs, but again this is something homeowners should discuss in detail with their HVAC contractor. Also, if your hot water heater delivers water that is too hot even after adjusting the thermostat, you may have a dangerously damaged heating element or thermostat sensor.
